30 Million Dollars Burning a Hole in Our Pocket
December 3rd, 2009 | by nightmare |The Seattle Mariners may be buyers this offseason after all, if you take GM Jack Zduriencik’s word for it. He says that Seattle “has needs to fill” this offseason. The GM is hopeful that Seattle can verify whether Russell Branyan is past his injury, and, if so, to resign him. So where will the money be coming from? Adrian Beltre, Miguel Batista, Erik Bedard, and their massive salaries will be off the books. All in all, Seattle may free up about $30 million. Zduriencik also plans to upgrade the bullpen for the 2010 salary.

Hey Nate, it’s Scott over at kissmyastros. We’re looking for a third baseman and see Beltre up on the list. As a local, what was your view of him? From the outside he always seemed to underachieve, but that was probably unfair expectations from that one huge season in LA. I really like the Figgins signing for you guys. Seattle will be the best fielding team in the league by far.

Scott,
I have nothing but positive things to say about Beltre as a baseball player and everything I have heard about him as a person. That said, he had that monster year; and was never really worth his contract. He is a solid hitter with some pop, but not a good eye. He is a tremendous third baseman. And from what I understand, there is no one tougher in baseball.

Thanks for the info. I think you will like Figgins and I also love the direction of speed and defense in that park. If you guys get a LF I think you are in business.

A LF and DH other than Griffey would be nice.
